A new report by the BBC highlights concerns over the suitability of NHS 111 call-handler questioning to elicit the necessary information from ill and vulnerable young people.
NHS 111 triage software guides call-handlers to extract information about a caller’s symptoms but the death of a fourth child following NHS 111 diagnosis failings raises questions about the ability of children to explain their symptoms in response to questioning and the challenges of the language used.
A failure by the system to acquire the information necessary to direct children and parents to the correct healthcare provision or course of action can lead to a delay in diagnosis and treatment.
Sadly, in the case of four children since 2019, such a delay has proved fatal.
All four children were suffering from bowel or abdominal disorders where a delay in treatment can prove catastrophic.
