The BBC has reported on the dramatic increase in patients waiting for an ultrasound of the heart in Cambridgeshire.
An echocardiogram is used to monitor the structure and condition of the heart and plays a role in the diagnosis of congenital heart failure and other cardiac problems.
Described by the British Heart Foundation as ‘putting people at risk of disability and potential deaths’, the waiting list has grown from ten to almost four thousand in approximately 18 months.
Recent investigation by the British Heart Foundation found that, nationwide, around 44% of patients waiting for an echocardiogram had been waiting for more than six weeks.
This massive increase has been blamed on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated disruption in the provision of health services.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group has said that they are working as hard as possible to treat patients.
