To add to last year’s many reports and reviews demonstrating the varied problems in maternity care in England, a new survey of those experiencing maternity care has indicated a decline in the quality of their experience.
Published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the survey involved more than 20,000 women who had gone through the process of childbirth during February of last year. It addressed issues of accessibility to care and support staff, care for mental health and levels of confidence in maternity staff both before and after childbirth as well as during labour.
Looking back at survey results over the past five years, mental health support during pregnancy and labour, as well as following the birth, was found to have improved.
The other key aspects of maternity care, however, specifically levels of support, accessibility of care and confidence in staff had declined over the years.
For example, in 2022 only 63% of women felt that they always had access to a member of staff to help them during childbirth in comparison with 72% who felt that way in 2019.
