A new report highlighting the results of a staff survey by the Royal College of Nursing has identified numerous concerns.
The survey, carried out earlier this year, gathered the views of over 20,000 nurses and midwives. Comments by those surveyed identify concerns about the impact of nursing shortages on patient care, patient safety and the morale of nursing staff.
Relating to the last shift the respondents had worked, over 80% of nurses noted that their shift had not involved enough nursing staff to meet all patient needs safely and effectively.
More than one in five nurses also commented that they did not feel able to raise their concerns.
The BBC, reporting on the survey results, observed that, despite increasing numbers of nurses, approximately one in ten nursing jobs remains unfilled according to the latest statistics.
