The results of the NHS England Staff Survey 2018 have just been released and contain some worrying statistics.
Approximately 30% of staff within the NHS in England said that they did not feel secure raising concerns about unsafe clinical practice.
Over 40% of those surveyed were not able to confirm that they felt confident that their concerns would be addressed by their organisation.
These statistics are particularly worrying in the light of further comments by almost 30% of staff who reported seeing an error, near miss or incident in the last month which could have hurt patients or service users.
It is worth bearing in mind that staff shortages and increasing demand are putting NHS staff under increasing pressure. Almost 40% of staff commented that they felt unwell last year as a result of work-related stress. According to the survey, this is the worst response to this question in the last five years.
