The BBC has highlighted current concerns of healthcare professionals, charities and the government at the variation in numbers of amputations related to diabetes across England.
Recent research by the government’s Office for Health Improvement and Disparities has shown significant disparity in the number of people with diabetes who suffer an amputation due to foot problems.
Diabetes can cause severe problems with the feet and, without timely and appropriate medical care, it can lead to an amputation and debilitating long-term symptoms.
Affecting blood flow and the nerve sensitivity in the feet, diabetes can cause reduced sensation in the feet and allow severe difficulties to develop such as infection and deformity.
The research found that some health regions carry out five times as many lower leg diabetes amputations as other regions and may suggest a life-changing difference in diabetes care.
With expert care, these problems can be identified and treated at an early stage, preventing the development of serious conditions and disability.
