Government statistics show the number of clinical negligence claims against the NHS rose by 18% in 2012 to 2013.
The figures, compiled by the Department for Work and Pensions, show 16,006 clinical negligence cases were registered with the compensation recovery unit last year. That is compared to 13,517 for 2011 to 2012.
It is thought the increase is in part related to the Mid-Staffs hospital scandal. In the past, people have been apprehensive about taking legal action against the NHS, despite having suffered extreme negligence.
But some experts believe the shocking findings exposed in the Francis Report have given victims of medical error the confidence to speak up and seek redress.
Have you been the victim of medical negligence?
If you believe you have been harmed due to a substandard level of medical care, do not hesitate to speak to a legal expert about your experience.
A solicitor who specialises in this area of the law will be able to suggest whether or not you, or your loved one, have been subject to unacceptable medical care.
If so, you will be entitled to pursue a claim for compensation. This will give you the chance to achieve a sense of justice, and will allow you to recover the money you have lost.
