Former client, Gill Castle, often hits the headlines with her determination to inspire and encourage women who have a stoma or who are struggling with a childbirth injury.
The founder of website, www.stomachameleon.com, has now established a charity called ‘Chameleon Buddies’ specifically aiming to promote social inclusion among women in the UK and Kenya who are living with life-changing injuries following childbirth.
Severe obstetric anal sphincter injuries, often referred to as 3rd or 4th degree tears, can cause devastating and distressing bowel problems if they are not diagnosed and repaired shortly after the vaginal birth of a baby.
The symptoms of urgency and bowel incontinence which are associated with these injuries can cause women to feel embarrassed and anxious to the point where they are reluctant to leave the home and are at risk of becoming socially isolated.
Occasionally, a 4th degree tear can lead to the development of a fistula and the need for a stoma, often another cause for discomfort and distress as well as causing practical difficulties.
The new charity aims to tackle this issue, through raising awareness and creating support groups.
Gill has identified the additional difficulties women in Kenya face getting stoma supplies and is also raising funds to address this problem.
Legal advice
Competent medical care of a 3rd or 4th degree tear is crucial to a good outcome. If you are struggling with on-going debilitating effects due to negligent care of a severe birth tear, contact Glynns Solicitors. It might be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
