This week is Cervical Screening Awareness week, aiming to raise awareness of the need for women to undergo screening for cervical cancer in order to reduce the risk of dying from this potentially fatal condition.
According to Cancer Research UK, more than 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year with around 50% of women surviving this form of cancer for more than ten years. However, the charity also notes that almost all cases are preventable.
Screening is crucial to an early diagnosis. A delay in diagnosis and treatment may allow time for the cancer to spread, putting the woman’s life at greater and greater risk.
A prompt referral for a woman who is suspected of having cancer is also essential in order to ensure that treatment is initiated as soon as possible.
If medical professionals cause or allow a delay in diagnosis or treatment, causing a woman to suffer significant adverse long-term effects unnecessarily, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation.
