A cancer patient from Somerset has had his operation cancelled five times in one month.
Charlie Mashin was due to undergo a 10-hour operation at the Bristol Royal Infirmary on 9 March, but it was cancelled due to the junior doctors’ strike.
Mr Mashin, who has cancer of the oesophagus, was told the operation would instead take place on 14 March, but this was later cancelled because of a bed shortage.
The surgery has been re-scheduled and postponed a further three times, causing considerable distress to Mr Mashin who has been told that early treatment is essential.
His wife, Helen, has described the experience as “exasperating”. She said: “You’re having to find strength to keep going for the next opportunity.”
“And he’s not the only person who has got this type of cancer – we were told they should have done nine last month and they’ve only done two.”
University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the running of the Bristol Royal Infirmary, has issued an apology.
