The BBC has revealed a spate of baby deaths at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust during the period 2014 to 2016 which could have been avoided had staff monitored the mothers and infants more closely.
Shockingly, five of the deaths have been identified as being the result of a failure to monitor the foetal heart rate during labour.
Apparently, although midwives and doctors in maternity wards are trained to monitor the foetal heart beat in order to assess the baby’s condition, errors continue to be made, resulting in tragic consequences. Where the baby appears to be under stress, prompt action should be taken to ensure it is not starved of oxygen.
Two further baby deaths appear not to have been investigated according to the bereaved families.
Consequently, Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, has instructed that an investigation be undertaken by NHS England into these incidents.
The director at the Trust has commented, “We’ve put systems in place to make improvements.”
