The BBC has this week reported on the shocking case of a woman undergoing gynaecological surgery under the incorrect form of anaesthesia.
The woman reported that she had been able to feel the incision of the knife as the surgeon cut into the area around her belly button during her surgery at Yeovil Hospital last year.
According to the BBC, the woman had been given a spinal anaesthetic instead of a general anaesthetic, resulting in an inadequate level of anaesthesia for the procedure she was about to undergo.
The patient continues to suffer from the trauma caused by this failure in care and the hospital has acknowledged that it was at fault.
