The BBC has revealed that it is now almost four years since the NHS in England has met its Accident and Emergency target of 95% of patients being dealt with within four hours.
Furthermore, January of this year saw the lowest percentage of patients being seen within this timeframe since the target was introduced in 2004.
Less than 85% of patients were seen within four hours, leaving the remaining 300,000 to wait until beds or staff became available.
The NHS continues to struggle under the combined pressures of high demand, staff shortages and limited bed capacity.
