A patient with curvature of the spine whose operation has been described as ‘appalling’ has been left almost unable to walk and incontinent.
Shortly after the operation, the patient, Judith Mills, had to undergo a further operation by a different surgeon due to concerns over the quality of the original work.
The BBC discussed the patient’s medical records and scans with other specialists including Nick Birch, former secretary of the British Association of Spine Surgeons who commented that two of the seven screws placed by the surgeon were ‘in the wrong place or with incorrect application.’
A review by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2017 recommended that Mr El-Maghraby, the surgeon in question, should no longer be allowed to carry out certain spinal procedures without undergoing further training.
