Hospital bosses have enjoyed a 6% pay rise this year, with the average hospital chief executive now taking home a salary of £185,255.
The investigation, conducted by a national newspaper, revealed pay packages given to hospital bosses has increased by a total of £35 million.
This means that nearly 1,000 senior staff earn more than £100,000 a year, while some receive more than £1 million.
This is despite the fact that frontline staff feel severely underpaid, with the Government previously rejecting a pay review body recommendation that all NHS staff be awarded a 1% pay rise.
Andy Burnham, shadow health secretary, said the issue illustrates that the Government has “got its priorities wrong on the NHS.”
“We have seen senior pay rising above inflation, when staff have been denied a basic pay rise. Those staff are working flat-out day after day. This explains why morale is just so devastatingly low in the NHS at the moment.”
“To have staff denied 1%, when it was recommended and the Government had promised it, was a kick in the teeth for staff who are pulling out all the stops to keep the NHS going in difficult times.”
