Following the suspension of a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital, an inquiry continues into the quality of care provided to around 800 individuals, both adults and children.

According to the BBC, long-term concerns and an initial review led to the orthopaedic surgeon being suspended while an investigation is carried out into the quality of the treatment which she provided in both elective and emergency operations. The initial review identified treatment as being ‘below the standard we would expect’.

Mistakes made during the course of orthopaedic surgery, such as hip surgery and replacements, can be permanently disabling and life-changing. It can necessitate repeated surgery to try to address the problems created by the initial negligent surgery. It can leave the individual with severely restricted mobility and dependent on support in order to mobilise.

Of course, where the patient is a child, the consequences of negligent medical care can last a lifetime, potentially limiting their life and career choices and causing psychological distress.

If you or a loved one have been adversely affected by negligent orthopaedic care, you may be legally entitled to make a claim for compensation. A successful claim would address the financial consequences of your substandard medical care.
