The BBC has recently reported the startling lung statistics described by newly- rebranded charity, Asthma and Lung UK, in their Strategy to 2027, Fighting for Breath.
It has found that the UK has the second highest respiratory death rate in Europe after Turkey, with around half a million people dying from pneumonia, asthma and other lung conditions over a seven year period.
Identifying lung conditions as the third highest cause of death in the UK, the charity considered air pollution to be a significant cause of the poor state of lung health in the UK but had found that poverty and poor-quality housing also played a part.
Criticising ‘chronic underinvestment in lung health by governments and health services’, and describing the state of lung health in the UK as ‘shameful’, the charity called for increased funding into research.
The key aim of its new strategy is to help bring about an outcome where ‘20% fewer people lose their lives or have their lives affected by lung conditions by 2027.’
