The latest BBC research has identified shocking new waiting times figures for Accident and Emergency responses and hospital admittance across England.
Statistics revealed that, of the huge numbers of people attending Accident and Emergency facilities during December and January this winter, one in five had to wait for more than four hours before being assessed.
Furthermore, of those patients then identified as requiring hospital admittance, almost 200,000 had to wait on trolleys for more than four hours before a bed could be found for them.
In comparison, the winter of 2011/12 saw only approximately 25,000 patients waiting more than four hours for a hospital bed in the months of December and January.
This situation has been described by the BBC as ‘the most challenging for a generation for the NHS.’
Inevitably, such long waiting times are having a knock-on effect on the ambulance service and the time taken to attend to emergency calls.
