The NHS has been weighed down by varied and increasing problems which appear to be coming to a head.
Shortages in nurses, GPs and midwives have impacted on patient care and staffing pressures led to the cancellation of operations in January of this year as well as reductions on cancer care in some hospitals as they struggled to cope with demand.
For the second winter in a row, thousands of patients were reported as being left on trolleys in NHS hospital corridors following overwhelming attendance at A&E.
Lack of capacity in care homes also meant that elderly patients were being kept in hospital when they could have otherwise been discharged, causing a block in the system and a serious bed shortage for new patients.
Now pressure is increasing for improved funding to be facilitated through increased income tax. According to the BBC, the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Health Foundation has observed that the NHS needs extra funding equivalent to £2000 per household and that the only realistic way to achieve this would be through additional taxes.
Increasing demand combined with reducing staff shortages and restrictions in funding inevitably impact on patient care.
