A new study by Cancer Research UK has found that 25% of cancer patients suffer an avoidable delay in the process of being diagnosed.
It further identified that approximately 50% of those experienced their delay whilst waiting for a diagnosis or referral from their GP surgery.
Many of these delays were linked to shortage of staff to carry out and assess diagnostic tests.
A response by the Royal College of GPs has observed that better diagnostic testing in the community would speed up referrals and diagnosis as well as relieving pressure elsewhere in the system.
Shortages of staff across the NHS are putting pressure on many aspects of health provision and putting the quality of patient care at risk.
