Slips Caused By Cleaning

Floor cleaning is a particularly common source of work related accidents, with employees slipping on recently mopped surfaces or tripping over buckets, cables and other housekeeping equipment. Nevertheless, employers have a duty to prevent such accidents from happening; if reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of staff are not taken and an accident does occur, there could be grounds for a work accident claim.

Preventing slips on recently cleaned floors

Employers have a legal obligation to protect the health, safety and welfare of their staff while at work. This requires an employer to take 'reasonably practicable' steps to enforce health and safety regulations within the working environment, and to minimise the risks and hazards staff face during the course of their duties. This can cover a whole array of measures, including providing personal protective equipment, carrying out maintenance checks and devising a safe system of work.

Consideration must also be given to housekeeping protocol. Indeed, it is likely that every work premises will be regularly cleaned. However, if not carried out properly, cleaning can introduce an additional slip risk. In order to prevent potential accidents from happening, an employer must ensure that steps are taken to reduce the chance of an employee slipping on a recently cleaned floor. This may include:-

  • Cleaning during quiet hours when there are few employees around;
  • Putting up barriers to exclude employees from wet cleaning areas;
  • Cleaning in sections to ensure there is always a dry path;
  • Using warning signs when the floor is wet.

Legal action following workplace slips

If, however, these steps are not taken, an employer will have failed to reduce the risks posed to his/her staff. This represents a breach of duty, and any employee injured as a result will be entitled to make a claim.

Therefore if you have slipped on a recently cleaned floor at work, and you believe measures were not taken to protect your health and safety, you need to speak to a legal expert. A solicitor who specialises in work accident claims will listen to the details of your accident before advising whether or not you are in a position to make a claim. If you are, you can take legal action against your negligent employer, allowing you to obtain compensation for the pain, suffering and financial loss you have experienced because of your accident.
