Necrotising Fasciitis Surgery Negligence Claims
Necrotising fasciitis is a life-threatening soft-tissue infection. Surgery can be crucial in halting the spread of this appalling infection, but a surgical procedure can also sometimes provide an opportunity for it to develop.
Speak to Glynns Solicitors, specialists in medical negligence law, to discuss whether you or a loved one have been the victim of substandard surgical care in relation to this shocking illness.
Substandard surgical care
Necrotising fasciitis can develop when bacteria which is normally outside the body gains access to the internal deep, soft tissue.
One of the ways in which this can happen is through a surgical incision.
A risk assessment of the patient and, where appropriate, the use of prophylactic antibiotics to combat the risk of infection may be necessary.
A failure to carry out these procedures may leave the patient vulnerable to infection and may justify a claim for compensation where the patient’s life is devastated by infection.
Post-surgical monitoring for signs of infection is also essential and a failure to act upon signs of infection can allow time for this virulent infection to spread.
Surgery delays
Necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency and the patient requires early diagnosis and immediate surgical debridement to remove all infected tissue.
A delay in initiating surgery will allow the infection to spread, inevitably resulting in the need for more extensive tissue debridement as well as potentially leaving the patient with greater tissue loss, greater disability and a worse level of health and quality of life.
Where a delay in treatment is found to have been caused by negligent medical care, it may be possible to claim compensation to address the challenges which the patient faces as a result of the negligence.
Claiming compensation
Compensation for medical negligence takes account of the financial losses caused by the negligent care such as a loss of earnings and the costs of care, treatment and equipment where necessary.
A successful claim requires a specialist medical negligence solicitor to undertake a thorough investigation into the quality of the patient’s care, using the medical expertise of the most respected experts.
Once negligence is established, it may be possible to make a claim.
