Necrotising Fasciitis After Surgery. Can I Make a Claim?

Life threatening necrotising fasciitis
Suffering necrotising fasciitis can have appalling consequences. This soft tissue infection causes the decay of all the tissue which it infects. Furthermore, it spreads rapidly through the body, causing damage and destruction as it goes. The only way to stop the infection is to remove all infected tissue so, the further the infection has spread, the greater the damage to the patient's body will be.
At worst, the patient may die. If they survive, they may suffer significant deformity, disability and even the amputation of a limb.

Post operative necrotising fasciitis
Every intrusive surgical procedure puts a patient at risk. Necrotising fasciitis requires a portal of entry for bacteria to access the body and a surgical incision can be such a point of entry.
Patients undergoing a surgical procedure require an appropriate risk assessment. Where considered necessary, they should be given prophylactic antibiotics to protect against infection. Following surgery, they should be monitored for signs of infection, any of which should be investigated carefully.
A failure to protect a patient, a failure to monitor and a failure to diagnose may all be regarded as evidence of negligent care and may justify a claim for compensation.
Making a claim
If a patient suffers as a result of negligent medical care, they are legally entitled to make a claim for the consequences of the negligence. This may include a loss of income where the patient now struggle to work, or the costs of equipment, treatment, household adaptations and care insofar as they have been caused by the negligent care.
