Treatment Negligence in Necrotising Fasciitis and How to Make a Claim

Treatment Negligence in Necrotising Fasciitis and How to Make a ClaimIf your GP has been negligent in their management of your symptoms, allowing your necrotising fasciitis infection to worsen before diagnosis and treatment was achieved, you may be able to make a claim for compensation for the impact of their negligence.

For example, if the delay in diagnosis caused by the inappropriate response of your GP has meant that you now struggle to work, you should be entitled to claim compensation for your loss of earnings, both past and future.

Responding to signs and symptoms of necrotising fasciitis

Necrotising fasciitis is a fairly rare soft-tissue infection. However, because of the extreme damage which it can cause to the human body, even to the point of causing the death of the patient, it is essential that medical professionals act promptly in response to any suspicion that their patient may be developing this infection. A failure to consider it as a possible diagnosis and a failure to refer the patient for specialist investigation may be regarded as negligent.

Necrotising fasciitis is not always a clear diagnosis but the symptoms which should arouse the medical professionals concerns could include the following:

  • Intense pain in the region of a cut or incision which could include an injury at home or a surgical incision
  • Redness or discolouration of the skin in that area
  • Swelling and tenderness of the skin in that area
  • The patient may also be exhibiting infection signs such as a high temperature or rapid breathing

Necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency. If a GP suspects that their patient may be developing this appalling infection, they should refer them to hospital immediately. If they are uncertain as to the underlying cause of their patient's symptoms, they should seek specialist advice.

Medical negligence failings

Failing to carry out an examination or failing to recognise the possible symptoms and make a referral for a patient who may be developing necrotising fasciitis may be regarded as negligent medical care.

If your GP failed to provide an appropriate response to your symptoms, leaving you with the terrible consequences of a necrotising fasciitis infection, speak to a legal specialist.

They will be able to obtain copies of your medical records and assess the quality of your care.
