Fournier's Gangrene Disability and When to Claim Compensation
If you are trying to come to terms with the impact of a fournier's gangrene infection which you believe was poorly treated, contact Glynns Solicitors to discuss the possibility of making a claim for compensation.
Fournier's gangrene infection impact
Fournier's gangrene can cause significant tissue damage and severely undermine an individual's physical integrity and psychological well-being.
Urgent diagnosis and emergency treatment are absolutely essential in order to minimise the long-term impact. This does not mean that the patient will avoid all long-term impact but it should prevent further deterioration.
A delay in diagnosis and treatment, however, can mean that the infection spreads, more tissue is infected and damaged and a greater area of tissue needs to be removed in order to halt the infection.
If such a delay and such a distressing outcome is due to medical failings, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation for the consequences of that negligence.
Making a claim
For example, if a patient suffers loss of mobility following their necrotising fasciitis infection, which should not have been the case had their medical professionals taken earlier action, the financial losses associated with that loss of amenity would be included in a claim.
If the patient requires additional surgery, or treatment or equipment to manage their symptoms, which would not have been the case with appropriate medical care, those financial costs would be included in their claims as would any costs of care where that is necessary.
Any form of necrotising fasciitis is a medical emergency. Medical failings which do not recognise this or which prevent this medical response and damage the patient's outcome may justify a claim for compensation.
Negligent care
Examples of negligent care which may result in a delay could include the following:
- A failure to carry out a thorough examination of the patient
- A failure to monitor a post-operative patient
- A failure to recognise the possible symptoms of fournier's gangrene
- A failure to make an urgent referral when necessary
- A delay in diagnosis and the initiation of surgery
