The Effects of a Necrotising Fasciitis Misdiagnosis and Claiming Compensation
A misdiagnosis of necrotising fasciitis can prove fatal. At best, it can cause the patient to suffer worse symptoms than would have been the case with an earlier, accurate diagnosis. It may possible to make a claim for compensation.
Suspecting necrotising fasciitis
The early symptoms of necrotising fasciitis may not clearly identify this appalling infection and may prompt a misdiagnosis of cellulitis for example. Consequently, it is essential that medical professionals are not only aware of this life-threatening infection but that they have a very high suspicion of it when a patient presents with the possible symptoms:
- A portal of entry for bacteria to reach the deep, soft tissue, such as a surgical incision or a cut to the skin
- Intense pain which appears disproportionate to the injury
- Swelling, tenderness and skin redness or discolouration in the same region, possibly the limbs, abdomen or perineal region
- The patient may also be exhibiting symptoms such as breathlessness and a fast heartbeat.
The difficulties of a misdiagnosis
Uncertainties in medical diagnosis often occur, prompting a referral to a specialist or for a second opinion. This route leaves open the possibility of a correct diagnosis being achieved.
A misdiagnosis can result in inappropriate reassurance for the patient and a delay in achieving a correct diagnosis.
In the case of necrotising fasciitis, a misdiagnosis can also put the patient's life at risk.
Necrotising fasciitis is a virulent infection, causing the death of the body's tissue and spreading at an alarming rate through the body. The later diagnosis is achieved and the later surgery is commenced, the greater the risk to the patient's life and the worse their long-term symptoms, if they survive, may be.
The patient may be left disabled to a significant degree, struggling physically, psychologically and financially. They may no longer be able to work and may require personal care.
Claiming compensation
If a patient suffers a worse long-term outcome from medical care than would normally be the case, they are entitled by law to make a claim for compensation for the effects of the negligent care.
