New Guidance for Cauda Equina Syndrome Medical Management
In February of this year, new guidance was published with the aim of improving the medical management of patients suspected of having or developing cauda equina syndrome.
New CES Pathway
The new National Suspected Cauda Equina Syndrome Pathway covers the patient pathway from primary and community care, through secondary care or presentation to hospital, and through surgery up to post-operative care. The degree of urgency of a referral for the patient is highlighted according to the nature of the patient's symptoms on presentation to their medical professional.
The relevant tests are identified as well as the need for an 'emergency' MRI scan - within four hours of the request - when appropriate. The urgency of surgery is also referenced within the document, noting the emergency nature of it as 'time-sensitive and life-changing.'
MRI scan provision for CES
Alongside the new pathway, the Clinical Imaging Board has published new guidance related to MRI scan provision for cauda equina syndrome, recognising the inadequacy of existing provision of MRI services for this sometimes emergency condition.
The new guidance was developed in collaboration with GIRFT (Get It Right First Time) spinal services and provides guidance related to the timing of imaging, the referral criteria, 24/7 MRI access, training, staffing, reporting and other aspects of this crucial part of the diagnosis process for patients who may be developing cauda equina syndrome.
Cauda equina syndrome negligence
For a patient who is developing this appalling condition, the efficiency of the medical services they encounter is fundamental to their future quality of life. Delays in referral due to a failure to recognise symptoms or to carry out an assessment, alongside delays in the provision of an essential MRI scan can allow the patient to suffer a deterioration in their symptoms prior to surgery. This delay may utterly change their life, rendering them severely disabled through loss of cauda equina nerve function.
Claiming compensation
If you or a loved one are struggling with the shocking impact of cauda equina syndrome due to delays in medical services, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation.
It is advisable to speak with a specialist medical negligence solicitor who can advise you with regards to this complex process and who can assess the quality of your medical care.
