I Lost My Job Because of Cauda Equina Syndrome
Are you unable to work because of cauda equina syndrome? If so you need to talk to a solicitor about the care you received, as you could be able to recover your lost earnings through a compensation claim. Please get in touch with us to find out more.
Cannot work after cauda equina syndrome
Cauda equina syndrome is a neurological condition that can have devastating consequences if not treated quickly enough. Without immediate surgery, the patient can be left doubly incontinent, along with the loss of sensation in the legs, buttocks and genitals.
An outcome such as this will severely hinder the individual's ability to work. Serious limiting factors include having to use crutches or a wheelchair, foot drop and dysesthetic pain – which is when the skin suffers a burning sensation when it is touched. This happens because the nerve is injured and so takes everything as a noxious pain.
Using a catheter to empty the bladder, and a colostomy bag to empty the bowel, are also difficult. However, the individual may cope in an office environment, particularly if they have understanding colleagues. But for some, the use of a catheter/colostomy will make it impossible to return to work – especially if they work somewhere such as a construction site.
Loss of earnings
Due to the effects of cauda equina syndrome, the patient may lose their job. Alternatively they may have intended to find work, but will no longer be able to do so. Other patients do return to work, but some have to reduce their hours, leaving them with a lower earning capacity.
Being unable to work can be financially ruinous, as you will have built a life based upon your earning capacity. Suddenly having no income, or a reduced income, will be extremely hard to cope with.
Recovering your loss of earnings
But you may be able to recover this loss by making a medical compensation claim. Cauda equina syndrome has a high medico-legal profile, because all too often doctors fail to diagnose and treat it within a reasonable amount of time. This can leave the patient with life-changing injuries, for which they deserve to be compensated.
If you believe that your cauda equina syndrome was not identified and treated quickly enough, causing you to lose earnings, please get in touch with us at Glynns Solicitors. We specialise in cauda equina claims and will advise whether you have grounds for a claim.
