CESI Medical Negligence and Compensation

Receiving the correct medical care is crucial for a patient with incomplete cauda equina syndrome. A failure by medical professionals to recognise the red flags symptoms may lead to a catastrophic outcome for the patient.

CESI symptoms

Cauda equina syndrome is a progressive condition where the passing of time allows the cauda equina nerves to become compressed, increasingly losing their control of the lower body. CESI refers to the stage at which the patient still retains some sensation and control of bladder, bowel and mobility. This is the optimum moment for decompression surgery before the patient loses further function and suffers permanent disability.

The red flag symptoms which might indicate that a patient is developing this shocking condition could include the following:

  • Bilateral leg symptoms of pain, tingling or sensation loss
  • Altered sensation in the saddle area
  • Altered sexual sensation and function
  • Altered bladder sensation
  • Altered bladder function such as having to strain to urinate or empty the bladder
  • Altered bowel sensation and function

Whilst the patient still retains some bladder sensation, they are considered to be at the incomplete stage and surgery to decompress the nerves may be considered a medical emergency.

Medical negligence and CESI

If medical professionals fail to recognise the symptoms of CESI, leaving the patient to deteriorate to complete CES prior to surgery, they may be regarded as having provided substandard care.

A failure to refer a patient for the necessary MRI scan with sufficient urgency may be regarded as negligent.

A delay in arranging for the patient to undergo decompression surgery may mean that they experience a poor long-term outcome and permanent disability, which may not have been the case had their surgery taken place whilst they were at the incomplete stage of the condition.

Claiming compensation

If you or a loved one are suffering the permanent impact of complete cauda equina syndrome, you may be experiencing significant financial losses and a reduced quality of life.

If this is due to a failure by medical professionals to provide the care necessary for incomplete cauda equina syndrome, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.

Compensation claims for this terrible condition can be extremely complex and require the skills of a specialist solicitor with expertise in this disabling syndrome.
