Cauda Equina MRI Scans and Medical Negligence Compensation
If an MRI scan is delayed, a patient with cauda equina syndrome may suffer the consequences for a lifetime. It may be possible to make a claim for compensation.
MRI scans and cauda equina compressioncauda equina syndrome. The diagnosis of this appalling condition is not made on the basis of a clinical assessment alone, but requires the confirmation of an MRI scan that the patient is suffering with compression of the cauda equina nerves.
A delay in arranging for a patient to undergo an MRI scan can mean a delay in a correct diagnosis and subsequent delay in surgery. A delay in surgery may mean a lifetime of disability.
Consequently, the onus is on the medical professionals who assess a patient at the early stage of the condition to consider that nerve compression may be the underlying cause of their symptoms and make the appropriate referral. This may mean an immediate referral.
Early symptoms of cauda equina syndrome
An individual with lower back pain may, or may not, be developing cauda equina syndrome. It is essential that assessment for other indicative symptoms is made to ensure the correct referral and diagnosis is made.
Symptoms which might suggest that the patient is suffering compression of the cauda equina nerves could include the following:
- Altered sensation in both legs, extending below the knee
- Altered sensation between the legs and around the genitals such as pins and needles
- Loss of sensation around the buttocks
- Reduced awareness of needing to urinate
- Difficulty initiating urination or emptying the bladder
An individual who is exhibiting these symptoms may need an emergency MRI scan. If diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome is confirmed, they will need decompression surgery within hours, also as a matter of emergency.
A failure by medical professionals to recognise the need for an MRI scan and a failure to make that referral may be regarded as negligent.
If the patient suffers a poor long-term outcome because their diagnosis and surgery were unnecessarily delayed by medical negligence, it might be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
