Bilateral Leg Symptoms Misdiagnosed in Cauda Equina Syndrome

Bilateral Leg Symptoms Misdiagnosed in Cauda Equina SyndromeBilateral leg symptoms of pain and altered sensation may be an indicator of compressed cauda equina nerves. A failure by medical professionals to consider this possibility may result in a catastrophic and permanent outcome for the patient.

Misdiagnosis of leg symptoms in cauda equina compression

If a patient attends their GP or Accident and Emergency facility with the possible symptoms of cauda equina syndrome, it is essential that they receive prompt and appropriate care in the form of assessment, referral for an MRI scan and, where necessary, surgery.

Lower back and leg pain may be related to and diagnosed as sciatica, but where the patient is experiencing symptoms in both legs, it may be the cauda equina nerves which are at fault rather than the sciatic nerve.

An MRI scan may be required as a matter of emergency in order to clarify the underlying problem. If cauda equina compression is diagnosed, surgery to decompress the nerves may be a matter of emergency.

An individual who is developing cauda equina syndrome may also be experiencing altered urinary experience as well as altered sensation in the saddle area.

When to claim compensation

If medical professionals fail in their care of a patient who is developing cauda equina syndrome, it may be possible to claim compensation for the consequences. Examples of what may considered to be negligent care could include the following:

  • A failure to recognise the significance of bilateral symptoms
  • A failure to make a thorough assessment
  • A failure to provide adequate red flag warnings
  • A failure to make a timely referral for an MRI scan

If the patient suffers a worse long-term outcome than would have been the case with an acceptable level of care, they may be able to claim compensation for the financial consequences.

If you are thinking of making a claim, be aware that claims need to be issued with a court within three years of the date of the alleged negligence, and that a thorough investigation in tot the quality of the patient's medical care is required before that can be done.
