No Bowel Control After a Vaginal Birth May Justify a Claim
If you are experiencing the appalling indignity and inconvenience of loss of bowel control due to negligent maternity care, contact a medical negligence solicitor to discuss the possibility of a claim for compensation.
Vaginal childbirth and severe tears
Loss of bowel control must be high up on most women's list of undesired outcomes following childbirth. At a time which is anticipated to be one of joy and positivity, the sudden loss of bowel control and the symptoms which this inevitably leads to must be extremely difficult to cope with.
Vaginal childbirth is associated with a risk of a severe birth tear. This is either a 3rd or 4th degree tear which not only damages the woman's perineum but extends into her anal muscles and causes, to some degree, the loss of control of the passing of wind and faeces.
At best, a woman may suffer urgency when needing the toilet. At worst she may require the fitting of a stoma to provide bowel function.
If this distressing outcome of vaginal childbirth is found to be the product, in full or part, of medical negligence, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation.
What is negligent perineal care?
Negligent medical care which may contribute to a woman suffering an unrepaired or poorly repaired 3rd or 4th degree tear could include the following:
- A failure to carry out an episiotomy prior to an instrumental delivery. An instrumental delivery, especially with forceps, may increase the risk of a severe tear which may be reduced with the use of an episiotomy
- A failure to carry out a thorough check of the woman's perineum and anal sphincter which should identify if there has been a severe tear
- A misdiagnosis of damage or a failure to recognise that a severe tear has occurred
- A failure to carry out an effective and comprehensive repair
If you suspect that either you or a loved one have been the victim of negligence of this sort, resulting in debilitating and on-going bowel symptoms, contact a legal specialist for advice.
