Breast Augmentation Results in Disfigurement

Breast Augmentation Results in Disfigurement

After having a breast augmentation and uplift, Sheila was left with grossly asymmetrical breasts. This has had a significant impact upon her self-esteem and she now wishes she had never undergone surgery.

When she was in her 40s, Sheila began to explore the possibility of having a breast augmentation. She made an appointment with her local hospital about cosmetic surgery but was not impressed with the surgeon and so booked a consultation with the Harley Medical Group.

During this consultation she described exactly what she wanted to achieve – namely, to have firmer, fuller breasts. The surgeon said she would also need an uplift, as an augmentation alone would make her breasts sag. This made Sheila very nervous as she was aware it was a more complex procedure; the scars were more severe and the nipple also had to be removed.

Over the following months Sheila thought about her options. She corresponded frequently with the clinic and the surgeon's secretary, asking questions and expressing the concerns she had. Sheila also took great care to reiterate exactly what she hoped to achieve with regards to size, shape and position.

Eventually Sheila decided to book the operation. She was still very nervous and uncertain, but she had a beach holiday approaching and wanted to be able to wear a bikini. She attended her pre-operative assessment where she confirmed the purpose of surgery was to regain breast shape, firmness and voluptuousness.

Before the procedure was carried out, the surgeon visited Sheila to make lines on her chest with a black marker. It was done very quickly by freehand and very loosely measured. However, upon waking from the anaesthetic Sheila noted that, although they were in bandages, her breasts appeared to be a good size.

The following day the bandages were removed and immediately she noticed that her right nipple was much higher than her left. She mentioned this to the surgeon but her worries were dismissed. When she returned home Sheila became increasingly upset by the appearance of her breasts as there was a very distinct asymmetry. Her right breast was square in shape, the nipple was higher and had also been sliced into an oval shape.

Over the following months Sheila repeatedly returned to the clinic to ask why her breasts were so asymmetrical and whether anything could be done about it. Each time the clinic avoided her questions and pretended everything was normal. However, the appearance was certainly not normal as Sheila's right nipple was so high that it could be seen even when she was wearing a bra or a low-cut top. Even so, the clinic refused to acknowledge the problem and simply told Sheila her breasts would become increasingly symmetrical over time.

All of this has caused Sheila a great deal of anxiety. She did not go on her planned beach holiday, which was the very reason she had planned the operation in the first place. Her self-esteem has deteriorated and she wishes she had never had surgery.

Sheila believed the surgeon did not mark her properly before surgery and rushed the procedure, leaving her with a terrible disfigurement. She contacted us to discuss her experience and we agreed the surgeon had acted negligently. We helped her make a claim and she was awarded in excess of £25,000 compensation.
